Viborg-Hurley High School Sciences:
I am from the small town of Lindsay, Nebraska and moved up to Viborg in December of 2016. I graduated from Wayne State College in Wayne, NE with a Bachelor's Degree in 7-12 Natural Sciences with a coaching endorsement. I recently got married to my wife, McKenzie, who is originally from Hartford, SD. This is my first teaching job and I love it already!. I love teaching science because of the complexity and its wide range of applications. I really push for hands on learning in everyday scenarios to enhance student learning. While I teach all of the sciences, I am extremely fond of Geology (the study of the Earth) and Zoology (the study of animals). Outside of the classroom I am a big sports fan. I have coached football the past 4 years and hope to continue doing so. I also curl (the Olympic ice sport) in Sioux Falls almost every weekend. I am extremely happy to be a part of the VHS community and look forward to being around for a long time!
- Students in Biology will learn about the natural world. They will learn components and functions of cells, cell processes, molecular genetics, evolution and phylogeny, diversity of life, ecology, and introductions to human anatomy. Students will be challenged and expected to turn in all projects and assignments in on time. Visual, auditory, and hands-on learning will take place in an effort to meet all student needs. -Students in anatomy will learn about the structure and function of the body systems. Body systems that will be studied include the skeletal system, muscular system, nervous system, cardiovascular system, respiratory system, digestive system, the blood, senses, and much more related systems and functions. Students will also attend USD's Cadaver Lab to experience a real human cadaver and perform numerous sheep organ dissections.

-Students in physics will learn about the aspects of the physical world. Topics will include motion, forces, gravity, momentum, energy, work, simple machines, states of matter, waves, light and its properties, electricity, circuits, magnetism, and nuclear energy. Students will be challenged in this course, but will also have a wide range of hands on lab demos and projects to learn about the topics in class. Students will also travel to SDSU's Engineering Expo to compete in various physics based challenges.

-Students in conceptual chemistry will learn basic chemistry curriculum that is designed to focus on aspects in everyday applications. Students will study topics that include: components of the atom, states of matter, elements, compounds, mixtures, chemical bonding, the Periodic table, atomic models and theories, acids/bases, chemical reactions, nuclear chemistry, and water chemistry. Students will do a wide range of basic labs to address real life applications such as acid-base reactions, antacid calculations, pickling, and much more.

Physical Science/Earth Science
-Students in physical science/earth science will learn basic topics in physical and earth sciences. This course will address physical science courses during the fall semester and earth science courses during the spring semester. Physical science topics will include: simple machines, work, energy, forces, motion, waves, light, sound, electricity, renewable energy, and much more. Earth science topics will include: tectonic theory, volcanoes, earthquakes, space/astronomy (basics), rocks vs minerals, oceanography, and much more.
